In Hillsborough, which is a quaint town that your wife would probably like (I'm a sucker for quaint towns, too), there is a development called Churton Grove which are newer homes. They might be on the last phase of building now. The homes are on 1/2 acre sites, and they are very nice. The area appears very family friendly. Every time we drove there, there were kids outside playing. And they seemed friendly (waved, thanked me when I slowed down for a ball, etc.) There's a pool in the neighborhood. We were tempted to buy there. We didn't mostly because of personal reasons, but it is very nice if you decide to go the "small town" route. The price is right, too.
Thanks guys, I will definitely look at Hillsborough and Pittsboro in addition to Cary!
On a related topic, does anyone know which schools / neighborhoods / areas have good sports programs? My kids all play sports, baseball, soccer, basketball. It would be incredibly important that the area provide a good athletic program.
In looking at Lochmere or MacGregor downs, is there any sense yet of what schools these neighborhoods will feed, or is that up in the year until sometime next year?
Do chatham, chapel hill, and orange counties have assigned (i.e. fixed) schools for neighborhoods?

The school is determined by your home address. Here is the link.
