One of my first dates when I was a student at State was at Lilly's Pizza. I also recall a first date at Porter's Tavern.

The art museum has a very swanky mod cafe right in it...two dates in one!

I like Irregardless Cafe. Interesting menu, some vegetarian options so you would appear enlightened. Live music most nights.

I think most of the ones listed are pretty good. I personally can't stand Mellow Mushroom and I think 42nd Street is too loud for a first date, but most of the other ones are good options. I didn't love Tribecca tavern either and haven't ever been back (plus it's nowhere near NCSU). Porter's Tavern is nice!
I love the food and atmosphere at Dos Taquitos, but it's not particularly close to NCSU. Humble Pie is good too. If you like Indian Food, Mantra is yummy and a nice, updated atmosphere.

And they have live music and a wine bar on Friday night until 9-ish. (Close at I've on other nights...)

I liked Sitting, but it was very loud, but ffodie-friendly :-)
