Chances are your phone has already downloaded that email prior to your phone call. Try using the internet while on a call and it wont work.

To clarify.

You cannot use data while on 3g with Sprint of Verizon due to CDMA limitations.
If your Sprint or Verizon phone is connected to wifi or 4g, you can then use data while on calls.
You can use data and voice with att on 3g, wifi, and 4g. There are no such limitations on the GSM network.

Text messages do not count as data, and you can text during calls on all carriers. Text messages are carried when your phone polls the towers to see if there is a call coming in.

Ahh maybe I was on 4G then. That would make sense.

I used to be with Sprint and liked them for the most part. The only reason I left is their data speeds are atrocious. Unlimited data doesn't matter if you get dial-up speeds. Sprint might catch up to where carriers are now in late 2013. Until they do I won't be back. I'm on AT&T. AT&T does not have as good coverage, but I think they have better phones and customer service than Verizon. I would have went with Verizon just for the call quality, but I had bad experiences with 3 different customer service reps. They didn't seem to care about having me as a customer.
