What is the best way to find out what is going on around the area? I've googled some different sites but haven't found any that seem great. Yesterday when we were out I overheard a lady mention there is a zoo/animal habitat that is going to be having a fundraiser and there will be blue grass music there sometime in the future. It made me start thinking that there is probably a lot of really cool things going on that I am totally unaware of. How do we find out about about random things that are going on in the area?

I like to go to the Visit Raleigh website and search the calendar of events. It will also list events in surrounding areas (Durham, Cary, etc.) It can be found here:

It's not a website (they have one, but it is subpar), but The Independent Weekly is a very good weekly newspaper, found all over the place (and free) with Happenings for the Triangle. Look for the racks just inside the door of many businesses.

I'd recommend signing up for the Go Downtown Raleigh newsletter. They email once a month about a lot of the events going on in the area. I always add a ton to my calendar from there:

Another site I found (probably here) is the NC Festivals site. Their calendar has a great list of festivals all around the state, whether you're looking for something local, a day trip or an overnight stay.

City of Durham keeps a calendar on the visitor's website & you can have it e-mailed to you weekly:
Welcome

Art of Cool sends out an e-mail with concerts in the area:
The Art of Cool Project | connecting music and art to people

There always seems to be something happening at Central Park too:
Events | Durham Central Park

I would also suggest as you find things that interest you sign up for their e-mail &/or like them on Facebook &/or Twitter.

Yes I hate their website. I think it's a ploy to keep you picking up the print copies
