WOW 100k per acre? Geez, I don't think we pay more than 20k here in LA and it depends, could even be much cheape such as 3-5k!).

I happen to have a friend applying for NP programs but maybe another nurse will speak up with more information. The only programs in the area are UNC and Duke, although there are some online like ECU. Just something to keep in mind with your 30 minute commute requirement.

I know she has mentioned the looking more closely at Duke since they already offer the doctoral degree which will be the new requirement instead of just a masters. I know several of my nursing friends have mentioned UNC has had budget cuts so they have limited the number of undergrads they can accept so you may want to see if this is going to affect programs at the graduate level. They have suggested UNC tends to get more applicants compared to Duke due to tuition.

I think the UNC hospital is doable from rural Chatham county if you are close enough to 15-501. I used to commute between Pittsboro and Chapel Hill and it is not bad. On the other side of Chapel Hill Northern Orange is still fairly rural as well.
