are the best? my son will be starting kindergarten next fall ('08) and i have applied him to sterling montessori, but i am wondering which other ones i should be applying to? i know they are based on lottery, right? so i feel like i should have our names in multiple schools. thanks.

I think Sterling is a charter school.

you need to go online and figure out which magnet schools serve your neighborhood based on your address first. Each school offers a different type of program, so it's less about which one is "best" and more about which type of program you're interested in (leadership, IB, gifted and talented, Ag basics etc). They have a lot of info about them on the wake county schools website.
There is an application period and you can only choose 3, ranked in order of which one you want first. The applications come out in January or Feb I think. They also have open houses and magnet fairs, so look out for those on the website. The magnet fair is probably the best way to get information on the various programs.
And yes, Sterling is a charter. We were accepted for this year but ended up turning down the seat.

The application usually has to be postmarked and turned in during a specific time window in February. Not sure of the specifics this year, but make sure you check. It is only about a week that it is open.
