I go to Cary about once a year to visit family during the Holidays. Every time I'm in town I make it a point to stop at La Farm Bakery (La Farm Bakery) which is a French inspired bakery and has great coffee and the best breads and croissants I've had outside of Paris or Quebec (almond croissants there are delicious). It's in an unassuming strip mall on Cary Pkwy but surprising once you get in the door. Check it out some morning while you're in town.

I wouldn't call La Farm "French Inspired," it's purely a French bakery. The owner/baker is Lionel Vatinet, a Maitre Boulanger (master baker), trained at Les Compagnons du Devoir in France. That's about as French as it gets in North Carolina!

I had no idea I would get this many suggestions so quickly; this is obviously a very active group and I have to say the handful of places I have looked at online look great so far (La Farm and Lucky 32 especially) and Chatham Square intrigues me.

I know I am going to need a couple of BBQ meals and Smokey's looks like it will certainly make the list for dinner.

I'm not sure how my week of training will go, but I am pretty sure that I am gonna eat well.

Thanks everyone!

If you think their almond croissants are good, you need to check out the almond croissants at Loaf in Durham. But get there early since they usually sell out.

I don't think I've seen these Cary restaurants mentioned yet:

Bella Mia - good coal-fired pizza.
35 Chinese - great authentic Chinese. Ask for the Chinese menu and don't be surprised if you're the only non-Chinese in there
E J's Soul Food - Great crab cakes, funky hours so check their website before heading over.
Abel's Bar and Karaoke - Chinese-style bar with karaoke at night. Tapas portions on the food. Meant for snacking and drinking.

I was also going to recommend La Farm. But I wasn't sure how far you wanted to stray from 1&64. Contrary to popular belief, Cary is not all chain restaurants. But the majority of the chains in Cary are in the Crossroads area right off of 1&64.

Here's an article from 2007: Cary: The charm of a fast-growing small town | Best of the Triangle | Independent Weekly

It's a great synopsis of the area. A couple of places in the article have closed. But the rest of the article is still relevant. And La Farm gets an honorable mention. Enjoy your stay!

If you don't mind venturing just a few miles away from Cary, downtown Raleigh or downtown Durham would expand your offerings greatly.

I may have the time for such a trip on Sunday night or Friday night (I am there Sunday afternoon - Saturday morning) and may drive around just for the sake of checking things out, but 90% of my time will have to be in Cary so I wanted to focus on that area.

I've never really been to this part of the country and I would like to see more than my hotel parking lot, but there isn't a lot of spare time.

I would skip Cary and head into downtown Raleigh, it's only 15 minutes away.

I like Poole's Diner, but check the hours first. - Poole's Diner

Also Boylan Bridge, if the weather is nice the outside seating has a great view of downtown. - Boylan Bridge Brewpub / Raleigh, NC

And Irregardless Cafe if you like some Jazz with your food - Home

(Don't get your hopes too high for Lucky 32.)
