We drove down to Myrtle early this week and went I-95 and then went backroads the rest of the way. Are there options to go to miss the backroads? I do not drive fast enough for everyone else and did not know the way we went would be lots of small roads. Are there options to go that you could go more interstate? Also, are there routes that would have more options for bathrooms? With the backroads there was no option.
On the way back our GPS took us by back roads. It did save us nearly 30 minutes but we're not fans of driving thru the middle of nowhere. Next time we'll stick with 40 and 17.

Thank you twingles for the quick reply. Same here. GPS is how we ended up on the back roads. I had looked at the 40 and 17 route but did not know how 17 would be. Are there places to stop if needed? Unfortunately I might need a bathroom option more often than others. I know once we hit 40 we're fine.

Yeah, the GPS really gets a workout driving to MB! We just did the trip at night and it got a little spooky. I was wondering myself if there is a better way to go.
We did the return trip during the day and were happy to get off the beaten path to see the area. Came across this mansion south of Lumberton -

Yes, you'll be fine on 17.
When we were on the way down there, we didn't turn on the GPS till we got close to 17 so it wouldn't take us on the back roads (as my DH had had that experience once and we just wanted to get there). On the way home we used it just to see where it would take us.
I think you can change your GPS setting from "fastest route" to "most direct" so maybe you can do that

We take I-40 and 17 as well. Taking 17 is most definately is not the fastest/shortest but you drive through a lot of small towns which makes the drive more interesting and there are a lot of options for breaks. (A must with 3 kids and a dog in the car!)
When we want to get to Myrtle Beach fast, we take 95 to SC38 which is exit 181A. Then follow the signs to 501S. Its 4 lanes all the way. Then pick up 22E, which is a highway. It ends at 17/Kings Hwy, right by the Tanger Outlet Shops just north of the Grande Dunes area. It takes us about 3.5 hours from Cary.
If we're not in a rush on the way home, we usually take back roads or drive up 17 to Wilmington.
I almost always take 40 to 95, then 74 to 410, 701 to 501. For me, it's about 30 minutes faster than going through Wilmington.
That mansion near Lumberton has been discussed a lot over the years on other forums. It's been rumored to have been owned by a lot of celebrities. But truth is it belonged to the Parker family, who made their money selling mobile homes...Parker Mobile Homes.
For years it was rumored to be the home of wrestling legend Ric Flair, and some other celebrities who I forget.
