Another good farm for local meats is Cohen Farm | "take care of the land, and the land will take care of you".... Murray Cohen in Silk Hope, NC. They sell at the Midtown Farmer's Market in North Hills. I've been buying all my beef from them for about 3 years, they also have eggs, pork, and vegetables. Since their animals are primarily grass fed, the tend toward being a bit leaner; Esta Cohen is wonderful about working with folks that are new to grass-fed about the different cooking requirements.
I usually see quite a few vendor selling meat (beef, buffalo, pork, chickens) at the Durham Farmers Market. I've also found localharvest.org to be a good resource for finding farms.
I also really like Mae Farm Meats up in Louisburg. We've had both pork and beef from them and it's very tasty! They are in the State Farmer's Market but welcome visitors!
Unfortunately, you just missed the Eastern Triangle Farm Tour (last weekend) where you can tour lots of different farms in the area. They have one for the western part of the Triangle (Piedmont Farm Tour) in the spring - look under "Events." Great way to find new farms. The brochure/map tells more about the farms.
Turtle Mist Farm sells meat at the Wake Forest Farmers' Market every Saturday. Their meat is absolutely wonderful. We've gotten bacon (with no nitrates added), pork chops, pork tenderloin and pork roast, and they've all been so delicious and tender. My friend got some lamb chops (I'm not a fan of lamb), and she said they were the best they've ever had. They also sell eggs and vegetables, and are such nice people.
Does anybody know if the Hogan Family in Carrboro is still raising beef? Rode by there for the first time in ages and their pasture is knee high in weeds and I saw no grazing beef like we usually see. I know their patriarch died about 2 years ago so probably some big changes at their farm. I miss seeing the grazing cattle.
You guys are AWESOME! Thanks for all the great suggestions. Looks like we have lots of tasty burger options . The farm tour sounds great; hopefully I can catch it next year!
