My parents used to put tons of signs out in their yard every election, but between having the signs vandalized and stolen every year they've given up. Plus it seems campaigns have gotten more stingy with giving out signs to individuals over the years. Used to be you could just walk into the party office and grab a boatload of signs. Now they act like you're a burden wanting some signs, especially for federal positions. It's very strange.
Didn't one of the radio stations used to do something where the day after the election you'd get 25 cents or something for every sign you brought to their studio for recycling?
I remember passing a house for sale in Durham during the months leading up to the 2008 election. There was a big McCain/Palin sign in the yard and several price reductions. I often wondered if there was a conversation at any point between agent and seller to say, look, this simply isn't good business. Irrational as it seems, emotions were so high (and the housing market so desperate) that I knew that sign would be enough to keep me from looking at the house.
I've thought a few times about putting up a sign, but it's not done frequently in my area, and besides, it's not worth alienating the neighbors. Instead, I'll be an activist in the voting booth.

I've noticed this, too. I guess they are afraid the "opposition" will come in and take lots of their signs, and throw them away. Of course, they could do that after they are put out, anyway. The one campaign office I actually went by would only give me two, and others that I email say they will just come put one in my yard for me. Unfotunately, my yard is at the back of a rather winding subdivision and only about 5 houses see it--I want the signs to put them up in visible places.
During the Amendment One campaign, a friend of mine found a stash of about 30 "Vote Against One" signs that someone had clearly stolen from yards (along with a fewe Democratic candidate signs) and ditched at a park. At least they were mostly still in decent condition--we just took them and handed them out to people who didn't have them (sounds like an episode of America's Dumbest Criminals).
Now, what irks me is when a candidate I support has about 3-4 signs all clumped together, when there are many other places with none. It makes me want to grab a couple of them and move them to a better area, but it would be my luck to be arrested for stealing signs!
I am on a "sign team" for a friends race. We have to write down where we put each sign so that we can go pick them back up after Nov. 7. Of course, I can't say every candidate does that!
I'm glad to hear there are there are fewer now. They are such a waste and serve no real purpose.
