Well, we were Blue by the thinnest margin of any state in 2008, and Red by the thinnest margin of any state in 2012. That about sums up NC politics: extremely Purple. Currently, the
state government has taken a rather serve shift to the Right, however, after a century of Democratic hold. We have traditionally been a split-ticket state, most often going Red nationally and Blue at the state level. This is the first time we've been Red pretty much all the way down. I fear a lot of Northern Republicans who are new to the areas don't realize just how different Southern Republicans are from Northeastern ones.

I just wanted to make sure that it was bearable there to not have kids (it seems like I get asked all the time why I don't have kids or married and it's frustrating)!

There is an active social group in the Triangle called
No Kidding for childfree folks. They have bimonthly Happy Hours plus other events, book clubs and outings. I would strongly recommend dropping by a Happy Hour sometime and meeting them. When I used to go sometimes, it was an extremely nice bunch!
