Long time resident here, I currently live in Cary and work in RTP. My next living situation will hopefully have me living closer to DT Raleigh, specifically in the Belvidere Park area (neighborhood near Lions Park).
My question is about the commute. I would assume that it will go against most traffic, meaning that I'll be leaving DT in the AM, and returning in the PM (good!). My experience is that the beltline is a mess at the PM Rushhour, so what is the best way to come in?
Options are RTP on 40, then take one of the following:
440 North to Six Forks to Atlantic to home
40 around the south side and up S. Saunders or Person
Wade Avenue through town, onto Capitol and home.
I'm guessing that the best option is Wade, and that traffic heading back INTO town will mostly be "not so bad". Anyone have experience? Are there alternatives that I have not thought of?
But you will be with the heaviest traffic heading into RTP in the morning (west) and heading home in the evening (east).
Yes, as one who drives into (near) downtown daily, DT Raleigh traffic is much less than RTP traffic (partly because there are so many side roads and different routes one can take into downtown, while with RTP it's pretty much 40 or 540). You will still be in the heaviest RTP traffic both ways, which is the most significant factor. I would start by Google mapping the route and see what that says--they might even have "heavy traffic" options?
I should add that I currently work from 7-4:30 to avoid some of the traffic. Coming into RTP at 645 each morning, I can leave my cruise control on the whole way. Hopefully that will help some. And if I get out by 430 I'm golden. If I get out at 4:40 PM, I'm pretty much [screwed]. <--moderator friendly substitution, I hope. ;-)
Wade Avenue, anywhere you're going downtown except within 1 mile of 440 North. Your next best route to where you're talking about would be 440 North to Capital inbound....but the Wake Forest rd/Capital stretch is a cluster.

Incidentally, I lived near the Woodcrest/Belvedere Park area for a long time, and I agree that the fastest diving route to and from RTP is generally to go all the way down Wade Avenue. Leaving home early and leaving work early will certainly help, but the traffic is still likely to be frustrating and annoying from time to time, particularly if when we get rain or (god forbid) a little slushy snow. But the Wade Avenue route is almost always your least slow option.
By the way, when you do drive home by way of I-40, you mentioned getting off at either South Saunders Street or Person/Hammond, but for what it's worth, when I lived near Belvedere Park, I actually found that it was usually faster to get off at Rock Quarry instead, and then shoot up Raleigh Boulevard. Plus, that way you can easily make a quick stop for some groceries on the way home at either the Kroger at Raleigh Boulevard and MLK or the Food Lion at Raleigh Boulevard and Glascock. Sadly, the Kroger will apparently be closing next month, but the Food Lion remains a good and convenient option. And of course, as other posters mentioned, the upcoming "Crawleigh" project is likely to make the whole southern leg of Interstate 40 a nightmare for quite a while, so you may not be coming home from that direction all that often anyway. But it's worth keeping in mind.
