Sorry to piggyback on the Audi owner's plea, but I was just given a ridiculous quote for regular maintenance on my Volvo at the dealer in Chapel Hill and wondered if anyone had a recommendation for a good Volvo service place that does good work at fair prices.
I agree with the ludicrous charges that Volvo dealers quote. I recommend P and A Smith in Cary. I think it is located off Cary Parkway. My wife took her 1997 Volvo there for years. P and A Smith even helped her sell it.
Also use P & A Smith and LOVE them. Volvo wanted to repair our '97's A/C for $1500. Works great 5 months after we took it to P & A for $150. They could have told us the same thing Volvo did, but they were honest. I won't go anywhere else.
Thank you so much.... I was hoping there would be a decent place closer to where I live (Chapel Hill) or work (Durham), but I'd be willing to drive to Cary or Raleigh for the right mechanics. I am so tired of being ripped off by the dealer here!
I can't help you. I just know that if I ever relocate, I'm going to get down on my hands and knees and beg my mechanic to come with us. My car did not pass inspection a few weeks ago (1998 Volvo V70 wagon). Actually, it passed the inspection but not the bi-annual emissions. The service station doing the inspection told me they could replace the O2 sensor, address the leaks, etc., for about $500-600. They warned me NOT to take it to a mechanic not licensed by the state in emissions control.
I took it to my mechanic (who is a genius; a hardworking guy and honest as the day is long). He's not certified as an emissions specialist by the state because that requires an $8000 piece of equipment that he says he doesn't need. He doesn't do inspections there anyway.
He fixed a leak and replaced a hose. He said if it failed inspection again, he might need to look closer at the O2 sensor and since that was not a piece he could find after-market, it might be about a $300 (not $500-600) bill. Total bill: $39.50.
I took it back to the inspection station. It passed.
I had some trouble finding a good Volvo mechanic in the Triangle, but now I love P & A Smith. They are very professional, very nice, and thorough. Hope that helps!
