After 6 months of Publix shopping I think they are going to need to re-think their produce department. The vast majority of vegetables were pre-packaged in styro trays with plastic wrap. Most Triangle stores let you choose your corn on the cob, green beans, etc. - which I much prefer. Their selection was pretty modest.
I went to Bing and Googled "Publix Produce" and saw many images of loose produce and good selections. Maybe the selections vary from store to store?
I imagine location has some bearing. But I saw this at a at least a dozen Publix locations spread over 4 counties...
It didn't use to be like this. Publix used "The Produce People" as an advertising slogan for years! I don't think this type of produce handling will fly in NC. And I say that as a past produce manager in this state.
It will be interesting to see what adaptations they make in a new market.
If only it were Wegmans. Then I could get excited.
There is a brand new Publix in Clemson, SC near where our daughter lives off the Clemson campus.
When we dropped her off in August, we went in there and the two things that struck me about the store were that it had so many brands of everything (something that I haven't noticed in all HTs) and that it was more expensive. it was also massive. That is my first experience with Publix since my spring break days in South Florida! My uncle is a deli manager at one in FL and had mentioned they were coming to NC.
I agree with posters who have commented that a market's location will dictate it's size and /or condition.
I am very happy with most Harris Teeters but the one I go to now in Holly Springs kicks butt on the one I frequented on MLK Blvd in Chapel Hill. Bigger, newer, and well-run.
We Wegman fans can only dream! Until then, it's HT for me and Whole Foods once in awhile. Talk about expensive!
A new article on Publix for North Raleigh came out in the N&O today and puts the store at under 50,000 sq. ft. It goes on to say it that they intend for it to be a neighborhood center to serve 11,000 - 15,000 people that live in the area.
Doesn't seem like a sure thing at all at this point.
