We moved from North Shore of Nassau County (right near Suffolk Border) early 2012.
It has been a difficult transition, not terrible mind you just tough. Salaries are much lower here and while housing and real estate taxes are considerably lower everything else is pretty much the same if not higher (I'm thinking of our health care; my similar family policy in NY was less than 1/3 of what it is here).
Not sure what your career is, I am in healthcare, payscale is what I made as a new grad 23 yrs ago or just slightly above half of what I made in NY.
We finally found our home after a very long search... great area, built in pool, large lot and all -but the water while not contaminated was full of minerals that made it very hard and downright smelly. certain levels were above the acceptable environmental agency standards... water company dragging its heels although ordered to correct the problem...We bit the bullet and put in a whole house water filtration system. It was worth every penny. There are always options if you look.
