Anybody know of a good tattoo shop in Raleigh for a cover up? I went to two places to get estimates, Phoenix Tattoo in DT, and Buck a Tattz on South Sanders street. Buck a Tattz was considerably cheaper than Phoenix, but I don't know if thats because it won't look as good or if Phoenix just over prices their tattoos. So I'm gonna ask you guys, do you have any experience with tattoo shops in Raleigh, can you reccommend a good tattoo artist?

I'd visit as many shops as you can, and look closely through their portfolios. I did this very thing many years ago, and walked out of quite a few local shops knowing I wouldn't take their work for free. There are a lot of hacks out there calling themselves artists. Take your time! Use your own judgement. If the artist acts like you're just another paying customer, and isn't enthusiastic about the job, keep walking.

I found exactly what I was looking for at Blue Flame. An enthusiastic artist who acted happy to do the type of work I wanted.

My husband got a great coverup job at Dog Star in Durham. He has a 20 year old symbol on his bicep, and got it covered up with a half sleeve. Katharine did the work and we highly recommend her!

I'll second Blue Flame. I dunno how much any of their less expensive artists charge, because the owner does my tattoo work.

He's not cheap, but he's worth the money.

^I did not drop any names in my previous post, because I feel like the OP should probably look around and take their time deciding on an artist they feel comfortable with. I too prefer Errol at Blue Flame....but not everyone likes the same type of artist.

If an artist's portfolio is chock full of Japanese style work, I'd think twice about asking them to do something drastically different. If they seem to specialize in macabre, dark, scary style work, I'd second guess asking them to do a child's portrait. But that's just my opinion.

I find him incredibly versatile. I reckon that's part of his appeal to me. :-)

I know people who've gone with other artists there and they have really beautiful tattoos.

Also, I just like Errol. He's a good guy.

Another for Blue Flame. It's tough to go wrong with anyone in that shop.

2 things to comment on for this thread:

1. i have no tats but i have plenty of friends with them, including one who travels to both LA & NJ for specific artists that are completing sleeves on his arms. he has used blue flame prior to finding his personal tatoo artist who moved abroad making her less available (hence the travels to LA & NJ). all that to say, several friends have enthused about blue flame & they are not willy-nilly with something like selection of a tatoo artist who is talented, reasonable, & safe.

2. i am intrigued about the boardmembers who have tatoos!
