We're moving to North Durham from Northern Virginia, and so far, we have nothing but positives about the decision. Better weather, cheaper houses, bigger lots, lots to do, great place to raise kids. You might check out some of the North Durham area. We have found it to be really nice on our multiple visits. And I think downtown Durham is really cute.
Mommalove, Asheville has primarily a tourist driven economy. There are a lot of service/hospitality jobs with low wages. That said, there are quite a few entrepreneurs making their own way. It's a truly lovely town. We have several friends there, but they are in the entrepreneur category. We have thought about moving that way at times, but it's a harder place to find a job.
