I stayed at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Durham Research Triangle Pk. It was a great hotel for $70 a night. And literally right off the highway. Easy access to everything.

Thanks for all input, we'll check them all, though it's conspicuous (positive) that La Quinta has been mentioned 3 times. My parents used to look for La Quinta when they traveled, maybe I'll have to give them a try...

Depends - are you staying on a weekend? Keep in mind, many places around here do business travel so during the weeknights they are full & on weekends they are desparate to fill beds (except of course during the busy college weekends - move in/parents weekend/graduation).
As nice as the area is, it isn't a huge tourism area, so you may find some great weekend deals.

If you have AAA check through them on the hotels. We've had very good luck getting some heavily discounted rates through them.

Another option would be Bidding for Travel. You specify by area/region and number of stars & put in a bid. Catch is you don't know what you are getting until they accept your bid. In some areas there are so few 4-star hotels you can know within 3 or 4 places what you will get. Other places not so much. In general we've had very good luck with that. You have to do your homework, but can often get a good deal.

You said you didn't know what reviews to trust. I usually look at AAA's website and compare their ratings to Hotels.com & Expedia. If all three are close, then I trust it. If they are all over the place I tend to rely on AAA's reviews.
