Hi All,

I am a single mom moving from Missouri for a new job in Rocky Mount. How far is the commute from Raleigh? Which area is the best for living such as, family-friendly, safety, schools, etc. ? Some people told me about Zebulon, but it is difficult to find rental properties on the internet for this area, any other suggestions?

Why not live in Rocky Mount?

On Craigslist there are a page full of houses, duplexes, and apts.

That was discussed pretty thoroughly in Hendymom07's previous thread on this subject a few weeks ago:

Personally, though, I agree that I wouldn't entirely rule-out living somewhere in or around Rocky Mount, or one of the nicer towns around it like Nashville, Red Oak, Spring Hope, or Elm City. Rocky Mount is clearly not the liveliest place these days, but one could certainly do worse, and it does have some things going for it. The location so close to the coast, the Triangle, and 95 seems advantageous to me. And the city of Rocky Mount has made some strides to try to improve. Anyone who hasn't been to the Imperial Centre place since they renovated and re-opened it is missing something really cool, and I like that the venerable old Booker-T Theater is restored and operational, though I haven't gotten to see a show there yet. When I'm in Rocky Mount, I'm even struck by the fact that I think their greenways actually have better signage than the greenways in the Triangle. And I've long maintained that Rocky Mount's huge, broad, sweeping Main Street, with the railroad tracks running down the middle and the walls of lovely old storefront buildings lining either side, is one of the great, dramatic urban vistas in all of North Carolina (it's just too bad there isn't more commercial or residential activity there these days to occupy that beautiful space). So, while Rocky Mount certainly has plenty of problems, it's not a terrible place (especially if you're one of the lucky people there who has a good job), and to me living there wouldn't be totally out of the question. But that did not seem to be the direction that Hendymom07 and the other posters were going.

I'd probably just move to Elm City.

I don't dislike visiting Rocky Mount. Not sure I'd wanna live in town.

No way I'd commute from Raleigh. Especially as a single mom.

Commute from Raleigh to Rocky Mount is about an hour, at 55 mph. If traffic is heavy and speed is slower, it could take a little longer. Check out the city's website at: The City of Rocky Mount, North Carolina and many of your questions will be answered. Their website also provides a directory of phone numbers of government offices that you can call, and since Rocky Mount is a small city and the public servants are not all that busy, most of them will take the time to talk to you and explain in detail whatever you ask. And if one doesn't know the answer, he/she will find you the number for someone who does.
