Hi ! We are pretty new to NC and are planning a 3 day trip for the end of January. We want somewhere to relax with 2 kids (ages 9 and 6)

I was thinking either Asheville or the coast.

I know we need a spot for my husband to fish and definitely need a beautiful view whether it be on the ocean or a lake...... Also will need to bring our small dog.

I would love suggestions on places to stay! I have been to Asheville once but never to NC beaches so no idea on the best areas over there.
We are in Chapel Hill and would like to keep the drive to 4 hours or less.

Thank you so much in advance!!!!!!
-Carrie

Both areas are nice. Just depends on if you want beach or mountains. I don't know much about mountain fishing — not sure if it's seasonal. I know there is a good bit of fly fishing in trout streams, etc. Plenty of surf and pier fishing at any beach in NC.

Myrtle Beach offers a lot of activities to keep children entertained.

I second myrtle beach, plus the rates are very reasonable this time of year there. The mountains are kinda steep this time of year as it's skiing season. Either one is not a bad choice.

Towns like Myrtle Beach give me the creeps in the winter. I'd rather go to Wilimington if you want the beach.

If you've never been to the North Carolina coast, and you've got three days to work with, I think you owe it to yourselves to go to the Outer Banks. Truly one of the intrinsically wonderful places in the eastern United States, and (to me) especially fun from November through February, when it's not as crowded and hectic as at other times of year. Barring crazy summer weekend traffic, I can generally get from my home in Raleigh to Kill Devil Hills in a little over three hours, plus any pitstops, so I think four hours from Chapel Hill should be no problem. Kind of a long drive, but it's so worth it.

The dunes in Nag's Head on the Outer Banks are fun when it's not blazing hot. It's like a giant sandbox.

Jockey's Ridge State Park

You can also go see the Wright Brothers Museum: http://www.nps.gov/wrbr/index.htm

Other than that, I find it kind of boring if you're not on the beach.

We did enjoy a meal at sunset at the Sunset Grill in nearby Duck, NC: http://www.fishbonessunsetgrille.com/ordereze/default.aspx (It has a lot of bad reviews; I guess we were lucky.)

For what it's worth, I hated Myrtle Beach as a kid. Outer Banks are a great choice as is the Wilmington area.

Agree 100%. Maybe too soon but this weekend looks great. Over 70 degrees. A quick get away for us is to drive down to Wrightsville and stay at the Sunspree (Holiday Inn) resort. Mercer's pier for fishing and good places to eat Wrightsville or Wilmington.
I watch for the warm weekends. Two hours down 40 and I'm cruising over the bridge into Wrightsville.
