I'm not talking about recruiters who can send out your resume, but an actual headhunter that works for you, the individual, to go out and sell you and find you a job. Any experience with this locally? Thanks.
The headhunter gets paid by the employer. So, for him/her to find you a job, they will have to get a signed contract FIRST - before they can present you to the employer. The fee to the employer is typically 20-35% of your annual salary (yes, you're reading that correctly).
so - take it from an ex-headhunter. Do it yourself. (If a HH contacts you and already has a signed contract, that's a different situation entirely.)
If you are in IT, you might consider beefing up your linked-in profile with your experiences. I have read, heard, and have now experienced that many HR and recruiters are using LinkedIn as a recruiting tool -- they provide a front end to the recruiters to really zero in on the keywords to find good fits.
I recently beefed my profile up and have been getting cold calls from recruiters and companies looking to fill positions.
I used to think LI was all about networking, but it is seriously used for the Recr. now.
in fact, I got a call last night and the gal told me she has abandoned monster.com, etc and just uses LI to fill jobs.

WeLuvNC is right on the money about keywords on LI so that recruiters can find you.
Headhunters are hunting for heads to fill jobs. Not the other way around.
Apply for jobs that are a good fit for your skills, abilities, and career goals. Even if you don't get short-listed for those jobs, you will be in their system. Keywords critical here.
I quit working as an executive recruiter a few years ago, and even back then I was on LI every day. Keep your LI profile sharp. Independent recruiters and corporate HR professionals are on there every day seeking good candidates. LI is a great tool both for recruiting and networking.
And if a person is looking for a new IT director job and wants to use a recruiter, ask professional friends to recommend a recruiter who focuses in IT executive level jobs. Good recruiters focus in relatively narrow functional areas. They don't try to be all things to all people.
