I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how much they pay for gas from PSNC? We have our electricity through Duke Energy, and that bill is a fairly stable $80 a month. But in the four months that we have lived in the house, our bill jumped by a factor of ten between October and November. We wnt from using ~15 therms to using ~ 110 therms. I feel certain that there was an error in either the first two months, or in the last two months. I have an email in to get someone to contact to ask them about this, but I was hoping to get some numbers from someone -- anyone -- just so that I have even the SLIGHTEST idea of how many "therms" people use. (What the hell is a therm, anyway!) our bill was ~$20 for the first two months and ~$120 the last two.

I have a big house but it is brand new, so it should be fairly efficient. There are only two of us. We don't use a lot of heat and the house is zoned, so the entire third floor doesn't get heat at all unles we're actively in it.

Can anyone give me even a clue as to what their gas cost/usage is?

We paid PSNC $140 for our January bill and $96 for our December bill (2700 square foot SFH). I'm not sure of our therms because I don't have the bill in front of me, but November/December is when the gas usually kicks in for the heat, so it's not unusual that it would go up then.

I would expect it to go up, but the factor of ten is -- frankly -- a bit alarming. Especially since it's been so warm lately that we've been sleeping with the windows open!

Agree with mich. My gas bill is usually around $25 - last month's was $115. No idea how many therms I use and I don't have the bill either. But you will see an uptick in your gas usage once the cold weather comes just as you will see an uptick in your electric once cooling season comes.

What do you keep your thermostat set at and how big is a "big house"?

Mine is always around $30 during the warmer months. Nov bill was $37, Dec $50, Jan $87, and the one due Feb 4th is $83. If you have a big house, yours sounds about right to me. Could be that the first bill was a partial bill and the second just not very high.

This is good to know! So a $100 swing isn't unusual for you?

I'm begining to think that part of my confusion stems from the electric and the gas having separate bills. Where I came from they were through the same company, so the differences between the seasons probably got smoothed out quite a bit...

The house is large -- 3500 sq feet -- but the third floor (~700 of those square feet) isn't heated unless we're upstairs. We keep the thermostat at 68 during the day and maybe 62 at night?

If you guys are not home during the day I would set the thermostat lower. If you have two zone heat, take advantage.

I keep mine at 68 on the first floor and 66 on the second during the day. It's probably 66-67 on the 3rd (Dh's office up there)...at night first floor is 62 and second is 68. I think your bill sounds about right. The good news is the heating season is short here - pretty much over next month. And if it makes you feel better my gas bill in NY for a 1600 sq foot house was about $250-$300 a month.

Just checked my bill online - last bill was for 100 therms - June thru October was less than 20.

Hope that helps.
