I am a bit late with my answer... A few years ago I went through a similar problem and it turned out to be far easier to solve than what I feared. I have a Seagate Barracuda 1TB/7200RPM, and it froze without warning. I did a lot of reading and right before I put it in the freezer I looked once more online and discovered that it was the firmware that had an issue. The serial number on my drive was among those affected by the bug, so I called Seagate and I sent the drive to a company they are working with for such issues. They reinstalled the firmware and everything went back to normal.

So, the problem with your drive may be similar to mine. Try to investigate that, or even call the manufacturer, as they may be aware of such problem. I hope this is the issue you are dealing with because it is the easiest to fix, and free of charge.
