I don't know how much the 'average' one costs, but mine was over $2000, as I recall. It was a major 'ouch'!

Do you know that it perks already? It's going to depend on the land and the size of the needed well/septic (the size of the home it supports). I know it can be as low as what Gurl's was, but then I have two pieces of land in Wake Forest that were ALOT more (and my family knows the guy digging the wells)!

My house is 2000 sqft - not too big.
But replacing the thing was worth every penny.

For the well, it depends on how deep they have to dig. Ours is 308 feet, and it cost about $3,500. Our septic was about $4,500. We're in a 2000 sq ft house on three acres.

It seems like there is a large variance. It does perc and the house is going to be a about 1800 sq ft. There's a possibility that I can use city water, but I definately need a septic tank.

wells typically run $10 a foot in a depth. septics can be 6-8k or 25k depending on which system you require (based on the PERC test)

I'd call around and get at least 3 estimates, from people that were referred.
I have a client that called to get her well pump replaced. She picked someone from the phone book. He quoted her $2200. I called a well guy that someone had referred me to. He charged her $900.
The cost IS determined by how many feet down they go, as sacredgrooves said.
Also, with the drought situation...make sure they dig the well DEEP. Its wells that are 50 to 100 feet down that are going dry.
My client's well is 400 feet down, although you don't necessarily have to dig that deep, depending on what they find when they dig the well.
