My Westie was just diagnosed with an enlarged heart and I need to see a specialist for him. My Veterinarian is suggesting a Cardiologist. Anyone with any recommendations of a good place to go? He needs to have an echocardiogram and my local vet doesn't have the equipment. My Vet has recommended a few places but I would like any advice or suggestions from this people on this forum.

I am also thinking about holistic or natural treatment for him if the echo turns out that he can be treated with medicine.

Concerned Mom of a loving Westie

Maybe try checking the NCSU vet school? I know they have an awesome program over there and I've read wonderful stories about people from around the country bringing their pets there for breaking new treatments and therapy.

Take him to NC State - you need a referral from your regular vet to see the cardiologists. My dog went there and saw Dr. Atkins, and he's apparently a leader in the field. Fortunately, my dog had previously been misdiagnosed with congestive heart failure and they found out at NC State she actually didn't have that!

That's the good. The bad: I never saw or spoke to Dr. Atkins, though he did the ultrasound. I only saw an intern and a vet student. Also, my dog's already bad back was injured during the ultrasound or the x rays, but that might have been unavoidable as they had to put her on her back. (It's better now).

I wasn't thrilled that I never spoke to the actual cardiologist so I called back later and another one of the faculty went over the results with me.

I still recommend them though and it ended up being a little cheaper than I thought as well. It is an excellent hospital.

I think that Veterinary Specialists in Cary recently added a cardiologist, but I'm not sure. NC State is the place everyone goes to. Good look, hope it all works out for your pup!
