My wife and I are considering moving to the Raleigh area at the end of this year and I just had a few questions. I'm looking for a smaller town or more rural area outside of Raleigh that thas low crime and is geared towards families. I'm looking for somewhere with a home between 140-200K and at least 1700 sq ft. Ideally I'd like at least a quarter acre lot. I'm not too familar with the area so any information would be greatly appreciated. Where I live currently is just too expensive to live, most homes even small ranchers are going for 230-260K for homes 50-60 years old. We currently live on the eastern shore of maryland and the housing market is just so hard. I'll be wrapping up my degree in computer science this year so we'd like to stop renting and settle down somewhere else and we both like Raleigh a lot. Again any info would be great Thanks!
All the people who have come here from the Eastern Shore of Maryland have felt very comfortable and happy in Clayton. I myself grew up in St. Mary's County. My husband is there now for a visit, and remarked to me how much it feels like our town here. Schools are great, houses with land in your price range and a great community feel! Come on down and check it out!

Would you be searching for employment here, or do you not need to work to pay bills/own a home?
I ask because this area is spread out and it's good to choose a place once you know where you'll be working, if you plan to work here.

I would ideally be working in Raleigh. I currently work for the government as a GS civilian, I plan on trying to find a government IT job before moving, but if it then I'll probably start looking in the public sector.

If downtown, you could live almost anywhere in Wake Co. Some places are a faster commute than others. Same school system.

Alright so it seems like Clayton should definitely be on my places to check out this summer when I visit Raleigh. How is the school system there? My wife and I are starting on a family so I'm sure schools will quickly become something I'm concerned with.
Is rolesville out of my price range? I have been hearing a lot of really good things about it. I see new homes going up around $150,000, is that accurate?
We have been very happy with the school system here. It is the main reason we chose Clayton over anywhere in Wake County. We chose the high school we preferred, then bought a house that fed into it, knowing it's feeder middle/elementary schools would be great as well. West Johnston was our favorite high school, allthough they have since built a brand new one closer to our home Cleveland High) that our younger daughter is attending.
