I take my kids to The Corner, Spirits and Abbey Road for dinner, so I consider them to be restaurants. Although I'll admit that I hate the restaurant section at Abbey Road -- absolutely no atmosphere at all last time we went (a couple of weeks ago). The lights were on as bright as could be and it was like eating in a cafeteria. But dang - the burgers are good!
Also, I agree with Lamishra -- if it's a "local" chain, I still count it as a non-chain restaurant. For instance, there are a few locations of Neo-Asia/Neo-China (Cary, Raleigh and Durham), but it's different than PF Chang's, kwim? If the point is to show that Cary isn't just Chili's, Olive Garden and Outback Steakhouses, then I think local chains are relevant.

Great, thanks! I was thinking maybe a "kid test" would be appropriate for the bar vs. restaurant classification so I'll move them on the next iteration.
You guys pretty much nailed it! Here are some others I thought of. I almost feel like we should include Morrisville given how much certain areas of town overlap.
Is taqueria del sol a chain?

I didn't expect the list to get to be this long. I think I'll need to break it down by cuisine, but at least I have it in a Word document now! :-)
Oh and I added pizza.. so feel free to post your Cary pizza recommendations, although no arguing will be permitted over which is really "real" pizza! :-)
I also could not keep up with every Asian/American Chinese place. I looked on Yelp and Urbanspoon for some of them but there are so many and it's hard to know if they are all actually still open!
Also don't know if you want to add coffee and bakery type places? I didn't include any of them in my original post. (Java Jive, Crema, SugarBuzz, Once in a Blue Moon etc)
Yes, Klara opened a place on Hillsborough St. in Raleigh a few months ago, and she closed the Cary one a few days ago. Supposedly she sold it, so maybe there will be something else opening there soon.
