My 9-year old son, who until recently was a well-balanced, self-confident, assertive child, has over the last month developed severe anxiety about getting sick (vomiting specifically) at school and, to a lesser degree, other places where he is not with his mother and me. The roots of this trace back to a 2-week overnight summer camp he attended in August where he got a stomach bug and vomited during the middle weekend, which caused severe homesickness to set in for the final week. The exacerbation of his otherwise mild issues occurred about a month ago when he got a common cold and begin to worry about how bad it would get, and whether or not it would lead to vomiting. This has created tremendous challenges with respect to getting him to school and keeping him there, and his academic performance and behavior have been affected as well. In spite of our best efforts, the situation seems to be degrading rapidly, and we think its time for professional intervention, so I'm looking for recommendations of child psychologists/behavioral therapists, specificallly in the Raleigh area. Thanks in advance for any help.

Lapage Associates is kind of the go-to in the area (I lived in CH) when I was looking. I thought the therapy was ok, though no lasting effects other than an interest in talking about problems, which I don't minimize. They're in Durham right off of I40 near the mall.

I found that looking at the bios online, then speaking with the therapist(s) by phone to discuss the situation and their approach helped me to narrow the search down. It is nice if you can get a direct referral from someone you trust, but that's not always easy.

Sorry to hear that your son is having a hard time with this. My son went through something similar when he was 11 - he got very anxious about vomiting or catching any other illness/disease. He ended up seeing a psychologist in Chapel Hill for over a year and is now in high school and doing well. He needed some help to get there though. So while I don't have anyone to recommend in Raleigh, I wanted to let you know that others have been through this too and that it can get better.

You may want to ask your son's pediatrician for a recommendation - they should be able to give you names over the phone instead of making you come in for an appointment. Also mentioning your son's difficulties to close friends can result in recommendations. We found my son's psychologist through a friend of a friend who had a son with anxiety issues.

I have a friend that just moved to Wake Forest. She is a psychologist. Although I haven't used her professionally, she has two young boys and is just an easy person to talk to.

Wake County Psychological Services Inc.

Her name is Dr. Rosanna Lora.
