Hi everyone - my husband's an amateur mixologist, and we've run out of most of the smaller-label and specialty liquor we brought to NC when we moved here. ABC stores don't stock that stuff, and ordering whole cases isn't practical.

We're in Durham...where's the closest place with normal, privately run liquor stores? And better yet, do you know a specific store that's good? Big-box places are handy, but it would be fantastic to find a small-to-medium store with knowledgeable owners interested in off-the-beaten-track options.

A liquor run seems like a legit reason for a road trip There has to be SOME state in the region without the ABC system....any suggestions?

There's no privately run liquor stores in NC. They are all state run ABC stores.

You could go visit NY or NJ, they aren't state-run Not sure about the states in between.

we'd totally be up for a drive to SC (or wherever we have to go)...wondering what's the city/store with a good selection, etc.

You picked the wrong state to move into if your affection is for alcohol. Everything in this state is a giant government monopoly. They believe in over-regulating everything they can. Take notice of the idiotic bills coming from our legislators this year.

your best and also closest options are probably:

1. North Myrtle Beach, SC
2. Right across the line from Charlotte - Fort Mill SC

however, before you waste gas and time, I'd google stores in those locales and ask them.

I went to a privately owned liquor store in North Myrtle yesterday. The prices were no better there than here, and the selection wasn't as good. Most of them seem to be the little mom and pop kind of joint...kind of creepy too

On another thread here, someone posted about a really big store right over the border below Charlotte.

Here it is:

Frugal MacDoogal Wine and Liquor Warehouse | Fort Mill, SC

Maybe you'd like to check out some of NC's microdistilleries. Top Of The Hill in Chapel Hill just opened one.

Here's an article the N&O ran in October about NC microdistilleries. You might like to take a look at the comments about ABC stores vs liquor stores—they mostly are lamenting the ABC store, too. The article does note that different ABC stores carry different stuff so you might call around if you don't have time to go to SC just yet.

LOL! Not laughing at you....just thought your answer was humorous. But it doesn't take much considering I was on a plane or in an airport for over 22 hours yesterday.

The other thing I found was that not all ABC's are created equally. Some have more of a supply than others.
