If you were searching on "ranches" that might have been why you were having trouble getting many hits. I think, but am not sure, that most NC cattlefolks say "farm" instead of "ranch".
That is true..around here "ranch" gets you a one story house ...
There are some horse farms and cowboys in the area, but they are a definite minority. Seeing someone in a cowboy hat, vest and boots is not unheard of.
If you start to get lonely, just stop by the Bull Chute on Glenwood Ave.
What a refreshing discussion thread. I was expecting another "Will I be stared out because I'm black/Asian/albino/LGBT with albino Asian kids/etc.?" thread, and OP turned out to be a hat-wearing, boot kicking, beefcake cowboy. Then, C-D responds with some of the best wit without rancor that I've witnessed in a while.
Thanks to all for a bright spot on an otherwise cloudy, windy day!
OP, you might look in the area around the western part of the Triangle. There's more land there, but it's still close to get into town. We have a lot of farms in the area that are diverse and raise cattle, sheep, goats, chickens, pigs, tomatoes, watermelon, potatoes, etc. Fickle Creek Farm north of Chapel Hill has a permaculture focus where the animals feed the soil and the soil feeds the animals. One question: Will my Cowboy ways get the arched eyebrows? There's enough of us here, that if we're paid any attention, it's usually a smile and a pleasant nod. I know NC isn't cattle country, so just curious if I'm going to making a spectacle of myself in my comfortable wear, which is usually my hat, boots, jeans, and checkered shirt.
Just make sure the chaps are full wraparounds. It's been cold here lately.
