They are JUST moving the high-schoolers later. In each scenario, there is an 8AM start, or earlier by some grade level. Fairfax is not doing this for the entire school system...
This sounds like common sense to me. Teenagers sleep schedule is shift 2 hours forward from children. Start the young kids earlier and the high schoolers later.

FCPS has been discussing this issue for at least 10 years. The last time it came up, there was a lot of backlash against it - one big reason was that sports would start too late for the high schoolers, particularly when they have to travel for games in the horrendous DC traffic. I've been following the issue again this time and will be curious to see how it plays out.
However I have seen a lot of cars driving with out head lights during dawn and dusk.
It amazes me the government has not made daytime running lights mandatory on new cars yet. Canada does. It is a very inexpensive feature to add. The government has forced so much unnecessary and expensive equipment onto cars but not this??? I just don't get it....
GM had it standard on all their vehicles at one time but not sure if that is still the case.
Wake county is about twice as big as fairfax (could make the argument traffic balances that equation). Wake doesn't have 8 million dollars to spend on a new transportation plan and wake is cutting buses, not adding them.
Otherwise they could follow fairfax' lead.
My HS started at 7:50 back in the day. We survived.
If you're talking geography then that's could well play into it, but I would think the larger number of schools would have a greater effect.
Yes, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is a larger school district than Wake County Public School System, although it is close enough in size to make decent comparisons. Area-wise, Fairfax County is half the size of Wake County. Population-wise, Fairfax County is similar but larger than Wake County (they passed the 1 million mark several years ago). The traffic in Fairfax County would be a greater detriment to busing issues than the potential longer distances in Wake. Having said that, FCPS generally has students attend schools that are closest to them (not always) and there is no year-round schooling there that comes into play.
And although FCPS has not adjusted school start times yet, I would think if they could do so, that WCPSS could do so, too. There are many similarities between the two systems.

It's a larger school district as far as number of kids in the schools than Wake County with 220 schools.
It's either childcare before school or childcare after school. And it really isn't the role of a public school system to provide free and convenient childcare.
