Generally if a lake has lots of spindly, jagged legs coming out of it it's man-made. If it has softer curves or is more or less round it's natural. Of course there are exceptions to every rule but when looking at a map it's a pretty reliable indicator.
I have transfered to Raleigh and I"m looking for a lake-house to live in year round, I am renting until I find this house I want to buy. I want a dock in the back of my house, on a deep and cold Mtn.-stream fed lake, not a man made creepy warm lake. I want to be able to jump in and ski behind my boat. I cannot find this lake, they all seem to be bought-up by the State. Can anyone tell me a road to look at or a neighborhood or even a lake that has docks behind homes within 30 minutes of Raleigh?
You probably should have considered that before transferring here--as the above posters say, there really aren't any such natural lakes here. Did you really expect a "mountain-fed" stream this far from the mountains?

Define what you mean by creepy warm. Even the ocean gets to 80+ degrees around here in the summer. Gaston, Falls, Jordan, and Kerr all get pretty comfortably warm by the dog days of summer, but not what I'd call "creepy" warm - about the same as the ocean, low 80s or so. The water is of course warmer on a still day at a sun baked public beach where the water is 1 foot deep, but out in the middle of the lake or even jumping off of a dock into 8 or 10 feet of water it's a pretty "normal" temperature.
Lake Gaston is farther than you want, but it is an awesome lake. Of the four lakes I mentioned, I believe Gaston is the only one you can live directly on. Another benefit of Gaston is that it is managed so as to maintain a constant water level at all times.

kind of makes you wonder sometimes how people make their decisions when they take jobs or relocate. I have to chuckle when I read unrealistic 'wants list' from potential relocater's...
I know most company's have relocation specialists, kind of curious as to why you didn't ask them all this info before taking on a new job in an area not suited to your lifestyle?
Simple Google map/earth views would have rendered you this info even.

The only place I can think of within driving distance is Bunn Lake. It is just past Zebulon as you continue on 64 where 64/264 split. As far as stream feed and the such...it is what it is.
I once heard that if "Lake" was the last word (eg Falls Lake), it was man made. If "Lake" was first (eg Lake Norman), it was a natural lake. Is that true?
No , because lake Wheeler is man made
