We had the opportunity to fly the first week the flights were available with American Airlines and what a difference a non-stop flight makes. We returned on differing flights and both were 30 minutes early making it only a 4.5 hour flight. Heaven!

Time will tell whether these flights stick around. There were nonstop RDU-LAX flights as far back as 1995, but they have come and gone.

I'm doing that one on Monday! (I thought the LAX one was via Delta, not American. Are there two now?)

Yes. AA just started nonstop service to/from LAX last week.

Husband flew the first non-top that American had . . they had a big "tah do" in the lobby . . food, etc. and then RDU when he arrived. . . dang, when do you see the Airlines doing anything extra for us poor travelers?

IMO, this is the way to go. I'd rather do the red-eye and "hope" to be able to sleep. If you can't sleep, you at least get to waste the next day in the comfort of your own home. If you took a daytime flight, you waste that day on a flight.

2 beers and a sleeping pill before the flight, and you wake up at RDU at 6AM, feeling like a spring chicken! (Last time I did the Delta flight, I ended up going to a wedding and a long reception the next day. Would have missed all that if I flew in the daytime. Not sure which would've been better. ) ;-)
