My parents are in town and they like biking on American Tobacco Trail. They insist that they don't need gears but I am not sure where I can find some bikes like that or is it something all of them carry.

Thanks.

Any bike store should carry bikes without gears.

Yes, ask for a "single speed" bike though. A bike without gears is for little kids, and since it doesn't have gears, it doesn't have pedals either. If you want something of "decent" quality, but not to break the bank, I suggest Performance Bikes. There's one in Cary, one in Chapel Hill, and maybe one in Raleigh too...

A "cruiser bike" or a "hybrid" would be perfect for ATT.

Around here those bikes are called "beach cruisers". If you ask for a "single speed" you'll likely be shown a single cog mountain bike. I've never ridden on the ATT, but everywhere else I've ever ridden around here, I was glad I had multi-speeds. I get customers all the time, who come in and tell me they bought a beach cruiser for the greenways, and tell me, "the hills are about to kill me".

This.

Beach cruisers are great when biking a totally flat area, maybe a few wee sloping areas.

The greenways are too hilly here not to have gears.

I don't bike the ATT, but the parts I've been on are flatter than the greenways near my house.

ATT is totally flat. Used to be a railway. I checked Performance and they starting price is in mid $200. I will check other places to see if I can find cheaper ones. Unfortunately ou don't most bikes on Criagslist are 21 speeds.

Walmart has some nice looking single speed bikes reminiscent of the old days for around $100 that should work fine for what you're looking for.

Wal-Mart single speed bikes are fine...Big K and Target too. They sell decent single speed Schwinn and Huffy bikes in the $100 price range. We use similar bikes at the beach because the streets are so flat in our section. We don't use the on the beach.

Just be very careful with those bikes bought from department stores. The people who assemble them know nothing about bikes, and do a very sloppy job of assembling them. The most common mistake is putting the forks on backwards...I see it every day. I saw some bikes in Target last week with the forks on backwards. Have someone competent with a wrench, go over the bikes and make sure everything is snugged properly. I wouldn't let my kids ride 20' on a bike assembled in a department store! They are accidents waiting to happen.
