The drive from anywhere near Raleigh to Rocky Mount is awful, especially in heavy rain, sleet, snow, or ice storms. You ought to draw a circle around your work location as many miles out as you're comfortable, and go from there.

Raleigh to Rocky Mount? WAY too long of a drive. Wear and tear on your car, lots of money for gasoline. I don't know anyone who makes that drive daily. Would be interested if anyone else does.

best,
toodie

Did you mean North Hampton? I don't know of a Northgate subdivision in wake forest. Stonegate is nice. I have friends who live there, big houses for the money. They seem well built, the value has not gone up, but many of those homes were purchased during the high of the boom, and they are now "readjusted" in price. My friends have never had anything negative to say about their neighborhood (they are in the newest section) except there are a number of rentals on their street.

North Hampton is also nice, it has a smaller homes in the "older section" and bigger ones in the newer section. They seem well built, sell well, etc.

Both neighborhoods give you easy access to 401/64 so that is good thing for your commute.

I know several people that make the commute from knightdale and wake forest. it is going against traffic in both directions, so it really isn't that bad. the circle method doesn't really work, because 30 miles on a single lane road at 55mph is not equivalent 50 miles to 70mph on 64.

I think Northampton started out as St. Lawrence Homes, brick fronts, large colonials. When St. Lawrence went BK, Standard Pacific came in and built smaller homes, although cute cute cute. I like Standard Pacific. they've done very well in there...I've had clients build two homes.

Stonegate may have been Drees? I don't remember who is building in there now.

Best method: Open google maps, get directions, put a marker at your place of work and drag the other around something like a circle but adjust distance so that the estimated time to the maximum time you would be willing to commute. I did this and it can be surprising how some areas that are closer take much longer to drive simply because there are no good routes.

That is basically the approach i took. i then compared the results against my education/income/population preferences on this site to narrow my choices. I am confident that wake forest is my decision.

FuzzFoot, I live in Northamptons and it's a great value, the current homes that Standard is building are much nicer then the first few with more details, there are also several St.Lawerance homes for sale at a great price.
