Wow taking the hyperbole to the next level there. This is a very small crack that does not go all the way through a part that contains a sensor and it not the actual reactor vessel. It should have been caught initially for sure but one of the reasons that they have these re-checks is to catch stuff that they might have missed before.

No way they abandon the plant unless they suddenly find something way more serious that is wrong. The plant they are abandoning in FL has many more cracks in the actual tubes that hold the water in the reactor.

Here is a technical abstract (free to download) that has lots of pictures about the area they are talking about. This paper is for a different power plant but the issues are similar. WRAL had a nice view of the "nozzle" as well on their story.

EPRI | Product Abstract

The Florida plant has problems with the containment building. They cut a hole in the building to install new equipment (a turbine I think) which overstressed the concrete in some areas and caused it to delaminate and create voids which is a totally different issue.
