I lived in South Raleigh, and our house was actually destroyed by that tornado that skipped around in April of 2011. Absolute devastating, but seemed really rare.

So I was down the street, sleeping. I was supposed to go on a date that evening, and my boyfriend had seen from the radar that my home had been hit, but he didn't really want to say. We went down the street over there, and there were trees in the house, water, the cat was no where to be found. It was a mess.

We are no stranger to tornadoes. Generally they are on the weaker side but we have had some strong F3's (April 2011 Sanford-Holly Springs-Raleigh-Rolesville, 6 Fatalities) and F4's (November 1989 Raleigh-Wake Forest- Franklinton4 Fatalities)

March-May and then November have the highest incidents of Tornadoes for the Tarheel State.

I'm glad we have a hurricane/tornado room in our basement. Not by design, just sort of happened during building. Sheesh.

Tornadoes that go directly through the Raleigh/Cary/Triangle area are fairly rare, but for whatever reason they are more common to the west and (even more so) to the east (like Wilson area) of Raleigh. I've only been hear 5 years. We had a pretty big one tear through Raleigh a couple years ago but that's rare. A couple years before that I actually saw some rotation just north of US64 in Cary/Apex and heard that it might have made a very brief touchdown near Cary Parkway just east of US1 (that's when we did decide to come up with a tornado plan in our household).

Thanks for all the replies, it really helps! I'm not really worried about it so much, an F5, maybe, but that's like saying a 9.5 Earthquake hitting Los Angeles, which would only happen once in a lifetime or in hundreds of years.
