Which middle schools in north Raleigh have orchestra or strings? It seems most have the option for band, but not necessarily for orchestra. Is there an all-inclusive list somewhere for activities for each school? It is difficult to find this information on many of the individual school websites, and the district website is certainly no help.

Has anyone moved to Wake County and found that his child is not able to continue playing in orchestra due to limited choices?

No clue how to find out without checking individual school web sites.

Wakefield Middle had strings when my eldest was there (2001-2003). Dunno about now.

I would check Ligon, but it is a magnet so you have to have some luck to get in. My son is in Hunter Elementary which feeds into Ligon and they have an impressive orchestra already. I can't believe how well the 4th and 5th graders play.

Ligon has an orchestra but it is a magnet.

If your child's middle school or elementary doesn't have an orchestra, there is the triangle youth orchestra and the triangle youth symphony

Welcome to the Philharmonic Association, Raleigh, North Carolina. Triangle Youth Orchestra - Triangle Youth Symphony - Triangle Youth Philharmonic

Thank you for the responses. After doing a bit more research, I find it disappointing that the year round schools are lacking in orchestra and extra-curricular activities. We were really psyched about the year round schedule, but it seems those schools would best be supplemented by other activities outside school (sigh).

I would have to say, unless you are in a magnet program where there are lots of electives offered, you will probably do most things important to you after school -- music, art, dance, club sports (hockey, soccer, lacrosse), foreign language (if you actually want your child serious about language). On the up side, there are tons of programs available for after school and weekends to do that. youth orchestra, choral groups, chinese immersion on weekends. etc etc.
