I've got an 8 year old central air system. I have one 4 ton unit outside with an evaporator coil upstairs that shares a blower with the gas furnace. I'm plan to replace the ac next year. I haven't called anyone for an estimate yet, but I have been doing some reasearch. My current unit uses r22 which is being phased out (Montreal Protocol agreement from 1987). I am a little annoyed that I have an r22 system since it was deemed to be an ozone depleteting gas years ago. But I guess that is water behind the bridge now.
Has anyone had a similar unit replaced? Did the contractor replace the lines? did they replace the furnace also? or just the outside condensor/compressor with the evaporator upstairs? and finally what was the cost? thanks.

Why would you replace an 8 year old system? Is there something not working?
All the new systems are R410. Expensive because all the inside and outside AC equipment has to be replaced. The older R22 systems can last over 20 years.

Based on recs from this site (thanks sacredgrooves) I would say to call Justin Woodlief, who owns his own HVAC company - he is honest and will give you good information. His contact number is: 919-796-2017

If you're replacing due to energy costs you'll probably be disappointed.

You can reuse the line sets but they need to be completely flushed.

To switch to R410A:
- The outside compressor/condenser would be replaced.
- The inside evaporator coil would need to be replaced.
- The line set (the copper lines that carry the refrigerant between the compressor and the exaporator) can typically be reused after being evacuated of R-22 and pulling a vacuum.

R-22 prices have increased quite a bit lately, but if your system isn't leaking it isn't depleting the ozone.
A number of R-22 "drop in" replacements exist. But those can be problematic too.

We just replaced our 10 yr. old unit in Nov., we got a free estimate from Lowe's and went with them. Ours is not like yours, we have 2 1/2 ton & heat pump. I have noticed a decrease in our electric bill by $30-$40 a month.

I have a small leak, most likely from the evaporator coil, but not 100% sure. I have had to get a pound of r22 put in the last two years. I know adding a pound per year isn't bad, but the cost of r22 is not going to get any cheaper. I don't see a point in replacing the evaporator for the current r22 condensor. So I'm planning on replacing the ac in the first quarter of 2014. I like to be well informed before I buy something.

thank you for Justins number. I will give him a call when I get estimates.

Evap coils leak. Not an uncommon problem. It can be repaired or replaced. Installing a 410 system when your outside condenser is in good shape makes no economic sense. Your break even would be 10+ years.

Alternatively you could replace the evap with a 410a compatible one and when the time comes just replace the condenser and flush the line set and evap and call it a day.

Now that is a good idea.
