We've had good luck the Avent Ferry location in Raleigh, especially in the summer when students are gone.

For those new to the area, the Atlantic Avenue and Spring Forest Road locations are one and the same -- it's in a shopping center bordered by those two roads.

I wouldnt recommend Clayton. We waited forever and the workers were so rude.

One thing to keep in mind, only a few locations are open on Saturday if you need that option. Saturday was the only day I could go and I went to the Spring Forest Rd location. I arrived at 7:35am to a fairly long line; they open at 8am. It took a total of 2 hours to get a license. That was not bad for a Saturday, if you arrive later the line is longer.

If you do not mind the drive, and this is my big DMV secret, the Hillsborough DMV on 70 is always empty.

I made an appointment at the Cary DMV for last month and I was in and out of there within a half hour including a 5 minute wait before I was called. Bear in mind this was mid-afternoon on a Wednesday. My husband went in the same day, but in the morning and he had to wait an hour.

Anything < an hour is good in my book. But always get an appointment.
