Pegotty, ill definitely check that traffic thing out. I've been looking at houses on the satellite option, and I never thought to check the traffic. Thank you, for all the help, and suggestions. I'm so glad I found this forum!
We moved to West Durham last year, in Orange County, and LOVE it. We are in the country on two acres but Im only 10 minutes from work and less than 10 minutes from downtown. So happy now and my car thanks me every day! :-)
Plenty of excellent, safe, and affordable areas in Durham near Chapel Hill. No need to bother with Raleigh. You can get yourself a 20 minute commute no problem.
I-40's heavier rush our is East to West (into RTP) in the morning, and West to East (out of RTP) in the evening. Assuming you find yourself in the northwest part of Raleigh as has been recommended, you hit some of that congestion for a few miles into RTP. I-540 also has some congestion as it flows into I-40 from northwest Raleigh. Otherwise on I-40, distance = time (most days).
Commuting into Chapel Hill off from I-40 in the morning will run you into some local congestion with other commuters headed to the hospital and university - some of the exits off the highway get a little backed up, and the local traffic heading to campus can be a bit slow. This will add some time.
As others have recommended, southern Durham (Southpoint area) would be a good place to look.

You could rent in Chapel Hill for $1200, too, but you'd get more house for your money in Durham. $1200 is doable in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, though. Not sure why you would want to live in Raleigh if you're going to work in Chapel Hill unless your spouse was going to work there. Schools are better in Chapel Hill and your commute would be easy in town.
You are not going to run into any crazy traffic if you are working 7A to 7P. You will be on the road at 6:00 a.m or 6:30 a.m. and traffic is minimal at these times. You have to remember that you will be doing the park and ride at UNC which will add an extra 15min in the morning and the evenings. Try to get as close as possible. South Durham is safe and very nice. It would be a 10 to 15 min drive (basically 2 exits up from the exit that you would take). Most that work at UNC are living in Mebane and Pittsboro for affordability.
