Hi! I'm a nurse, with a husband, and 3 children relocating from NY to NC to be near family. I have a few job offers in Chapel Hill, but am looking to rent a house in Raleigh. Chapel Hill is out of my price range. I was originally looking at Cameron, NC, which is where my family is located, but the commute to Raleigh alone, is an hour. How's the commute from Raleigh to Chapel Hill? Also, what parts of Raleigh should I be looking at for rentals? I read somewhere to stay away from South Raleigh. Any help would be great, thank you!
So I just did the drive from UNC to Cary last week during rush hour. Took me 30 minutes. I was surprised it took me about the same time as getting to Durham does.
I lived in Northeast Raleigh (almost to Knightdale) and the commute to West Durham (near 15-501) was 30-45 minutes on a good day. Then add weather and/or an accident....
Doctor office hours, so 8-5pm. A 30-45 minute drive in NY could easily turn into hours during winter. I don't mind driving though. Is there an area closer to Chapel Hill that would be affordable? We will start off renting. My budget is no more than $1200/month. We have only visited the area in Raleigh, and I loved the atmosphere.
I have that commute as well. I'm in N. Raleigh off of Falls of Neuse and it's typically 40 minutes from my apartment to my parking deck. Working the hours you are working though, your commute to Chapel Hill won't be as bad - peak traffic on I-540 hits around 8:00 AM. It gets backed up between Capital Blvd and Leesville Rd and then from Leesville to I-40 it's usually smooth sailing unless there's an accident.
Closer places to look would be the Woodcroft and Southpoint areas of Durham as well Morrisville and the Brier Creek and Leesville Rd areas in Raleigh (although in the cases of Brier Creek, Morrisville, and Leesville Rd you'll likely have increased aircraft traffic overhead due to their proximity to the RDU approach paths).
Ditto looking in Brier Creek as well as Morrisville. Also, if it were me, I would also look in northern Pittsboro and some more country areas right outside Chapel Hill...15-501 area. It's rural but very pretty and convenient to Chapel Hill.
I have found a really good way of checking commute times is to go to Google Maps and enter both addresses (rental/work) DURING the time you will be commuting. It will give you "in current traffic" estimate as well as a normal estimate. If you then turn on the "traffic" function you can see all the traffic snarls and slowdowns in red and yellow. Green means traffic is running smoothly. It's in real time, too. I once used it to navigate my husband out of a traffic snarl he inadvertently found himself in on his way home.
