I posted a request for help with relocation last year, when we thought we might be moving to the area. That particular opportunity wasn't exactly what we were looking for, so we decided to stay put for the time being. Now, my husband has a new job offer in hand (Yay!) so it looks like we are finally heading to NC! I re-read my original post and what I describe there is still what we are looking for. However, this job is located in Morrisville, just off of 540. So, it would be really helpful to get some insight into where we should be looking. It seems that Morrisville or Cary would be really close by and the commute would be pretty brief. Would Chapel Hill be an option? How long of a commute would you expect from there? I'm including my original post and would really appreciate any thoughts you could share.
Thanks so much!

Hi All,
I know I'm one of many asking about neighborhoods and RTP towns in regard to relocation, and I've read a ton of your helpful posts. I'm hoping you might be able to chime in on one more request for info!

My family is very excited about a likely move to the Raleigh area. My husband and I both grew up in Northern Virginia and we have lived, for the last 5 years, in a small town in the midwest. We love the idea of coming back to the east coast and are thrilled at the idea of moving to the Raleigh area.

Here's the thing... our kids are getting older (10 and 13) and we've kind of figure out what we want:
Obviously, good schools are at the top of our list. We've also kind of fallen in love with the small town we live in. We've done crowded suburbs and love the convenience, but when it comes right down to it, we kind of like the idea of something just a bit removed from the hubbub. Also, we'd like a house a bit smaller than our current 4,000 sq ft home. We'd love to find (or maybe build?) something smaller with a smarter layout and less formality.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read my long post! I appreciate any input you might have

Chapel is not a bad commute from Morrisville/Western Cary. 20 minutes? Traffic can depending on the type of day be a bit much but there are lots of options highway wise. Interestate 40, 54, 55, the back roads. There are some neighborhoods of the beaten path throughout that area. You may consider Suburban Durham county also off of fayetteville rd.

Hillsborough or Pittsboro might work for you, too. If Hillsborough you could get on 40 pretty easily and go in. If Pittsboro, you could do 64 over toward Morrisville.

Plenty of people live in Chapel Hill and Carrboro and work in RTP, Morrisville, Cary, Raleigh, Durham, so it's really up to you how much of a commute you want.

I live in SW Durham, very close to the border of Chapel Hill, and my commute to Morrisville is 15 mins. My office is also right off of 540. I do live right near I-40, so the commute time is short since it's all highway. Depending on where you live in CH, you could tack on up to 10 mins or so, working your way through inside roads. Also, the commute from CH to Morrisville is not bad at all since most of the traffic is headed in the opposite direction.

I also lived in Cary for a short time, and my commute time was still about 15 mins in the morning, but evenings were the worst, as I had to drive south on NC-54, which gets backed up a lot in Morrisville.
