I'd really consider leaving it. If you have a snake hanging around your property you probably have something that is attracting it. If you move it another less desirable snake, such as a copperhead, may move in to the vacancy.

We see black snakes on our property every year. When they come close to the house (such as the one that was climbing the railing on our front porch steps the other day), my husband gets out his homemade snake noose, captures it, and relocates in down the street in an empty lot. We sometimes see them on the edge of the woods, and as long as they stay there, we leave them alone.

Haven't had a mouse problem since the first month or two after the house was built.

The black snakes are not aggressive, and want to get away from you as much as you want to get away from it. As long as it's not harassed, it won't bother you.

I can completely sympathize! You don't want it on your property but don't want it killed---exactly how I feel. One of the reasons I don't want them around is because I have an active backyard bird population including nests with babies, and it is heartbreaking to find that a snake has swallowed baby birds despite all care taken to protect the nest! We see one or two a year. My husband (truly a DH regarding snakes, lol), uses a grabber--and hands as necessary-- to pick them up while I hold a pillowcase, he drops them in the pillowcase while I squirm, then drives them to an empty lot in the country and sets them free. If you are too squeamish to do this yourself, there are services locally who would do it for you.

I had not thought about this. Thank you.

If you find a way to catch it, I'll take it. I have a yard and garden full of voles for her and her babies to eat. Nom.

Personally, I was just trying to calm her fears, not make her feel bad.
