We were in the same spot as you 14 years ago, worried about finding apartments that allowed dogs. You'll be pleasantly surprised the area is VERY dog-friendly. Search for the apartment you want and chances are it will allow dogs. Some have a monthly pet fees, but many (most?) don't. Some of the apartments have their own dog play areas as well.
We lived in a 3rd floor apartment for 9 months until we bought a house, then we passed on our apartment to a friend who also had a dog (shepherd mix).
Good luck!
(ps We also looked at rent houses but settled on an apartment. After our first visit to the area we stopped considering houses and focused on apartments)

Some apartments will allow even those breeds listed as aggressive if a pet interview is conducted. I'm not sure how that would be accomplished if you are not local (maybe a video of your dog sent to the site manager).
My daughters current roommate, who is moving this week, has a pitbull and was accepted at her new place after an interview with the dog. I "think" she is moving into Camden Overlook in Raleigh which also appears to have short term rentals. I can double check with her to see what place it is but you might want to give them a call in the interim.
And your dog is a cutie!!!

Just tell the apartment manager you have a "shephardoodle" with the temperament of a little poodle but the looks of a shepard. (just kidding)

When we first moved here with our GSD mix, we lived at Stonehenge Apartments off of Creedmore Road. They had no issue with our dog.

We lived at The Lodge at Crossroads in Cary a few years back and really liked it there. They were a bit pricey but very nice. While we were there they added a dog run. Also our neighbor next door had a big dog (not sure of the breed) and we saw other big dogs as well. There are also some great places nearby to walk your dog. Good luck and welcome to the area!

In the Brier Creek area, The Crossings at Alexander Pkace allow large dogs and have a small off leash dog park within the complex. I haven't any idea of their length of lease terms.
Carrington at Brier Creek definitely does short term leases, starting at 3 months, and they allow digs. They state a weight limit, but when we lived there in 2012 it was not enforced. The units themselves are unusually large, recently updated, but the management leaves a lot to be desired. They are also very well priced. For a temporary residence with pets, I would certainly recommend them if the location works for you.

As a footnote: We travel a lot with our dog (always by car) , have done hotels, rentals and home exchanges. One of the BEST things we did was put Riley into training that included the Canine Good Citizen Test. He barely passed, but having that certificate gave us entry to places that normally didn't allow dogs.

We were looking last weekend over in the Cary area I think off of Maynard Has nice Dog park and we saw lot of large dog walking in the area. It is only maybe 10 min to PNC I think. Check out that area it was near the park/Harris Teeter and A Walgreens/ Harrison and Maynard I think, We loved the area and may move in the fall.

Plus you are only about a 5-10 minute drive from Umstead Park, a popular hiking spot. Brier Creek is in the middle of everything so Durham, Chapel Hill and Cary are not that far away.
