We're thinking of driving up to visit family in Northern Virginia (Centerville/Chantilly area) over the Fourth of July weekend. Because of meet the teacher at my son's school we might not head up until the morning of the fourth. Have any of you traveled to the DC area on the fourth and if so how was the traffic heading up there?

Yes, you can expect delays.

We'll be joining you in the traffic jams. We're headed to Ashburn Thursday morning, so same direction as you. Hopping off at 234 will hopefully avoid some of the worst delays on 95.

I've not gone on the 4th but on other holiday weekends. 9 hour drive? No thanks! I would leave home at 0 dark thirty and expect delays once you get to Fredericksburg. Everyone in NVA is on the move On July 4 there.

Im taking the train up on Monday and coming back on Saturday. IF there are delays the train has WiFi.

We did NY to NC two years ago on the 4th and there was NOBODY on the roads. We flew thru NOVA at lightning speed and didn't even recognize it because we've never actually seen I95 there at highway speed!

Now here's the caveat - that was a PERFECT beach day on the east coast, high 80s and no humidity, so everyone was probably otherwise occupied. If the weather is as crappy as predicted then you might have problems.

I think the defining characteristic of driving through NOVA is that you just never know. Check the traffic regularly on your phone and be ready to re-route cross-country if you need to.

We're heading up there, too. And we're actually there now! I'm not expecting that it will be bad - at least early in the day. Heading into DC proper is another story on the 4th but I think going into NoVA it will be okay. At least I hope so!

The traffic app on my smartphone gets tons of use when I head that way. If traffic looks bad after our stop at Bass Pro Shops in Ashland, VA, then we cutover to 301 to take the rural route (of course our destination is in MD not VA).

We are heading in that general direction as well. Which traffic app do you use?
