Hi all, I am a young professional relocating to the Raleigh area later this month for work. I have been living in Pittsburgh for the past 6 years and am looking to find a place that is centrally located for walking/nightlife and fun for someone my age (25 yo).
Any suggestions on areas and/or specific apartment buildings?
Hey there! Glad you posted in the Triangle forum - was going to respond to your other thread but hadn't had a chance.
I just reread the other thread - will you definitely have a job in Raleigh proper or do you have flexibility to live somewhere in the area? Glenwood South, as mentioned before, or the Five Points area of Raleigh (not many apartments there though) are fun and walkable areas of Raleigh but if you have flexibility, you might want to consider living in Durham. Living downtown gives you more options and walkability (of course not to the level of larger cities like Pittsburgh and Philly) and fun things to do. You can walk or bike to the Farmer's Market (Wed and Sat), which is a really good market. Food trucks abound in the city and the food scene is always rated well. There are bars and breweries, the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) which gets lots of concerts, shows, plays, etc. Raleigh is a bit more spread out in that sense and there isn't a good grocery store within walking distance.
I personally don't live in Durham so I'm not as familiar with the neighborhoods but others may chime in. I live in Raleigh but have a family and work here so am happy here. After 6 years though, knowing what I know now, I would pick Durham to live in if I were in your shoes. Good luck with the move!
While I'm a Durham native who currently lives in downtown Durham, I would probably recommend something in the Glenwood South or Fayetteville St. area in Raleigh if you're interested in nightlife. Durham is more unique and has a lot of interesting spots, but honestly, it's still a little sleepy on the weekends. Lots of cool places to grab a beer or two with a few friends, but not very many lively spots or good places to meet other singles, etc. Raleigh, on the other hand, is great for that.
It depends what your priorities are, though. If you're not a big go-outer, Durham is probably more convenient and interesting.
it depends on your budget. the PNC Plaza would be on the high end. Cameron Court would be on the low end.
