Do you live near water?

You can avoid palmetto bugs here by avoiding homes near water. Or basements.

Or apartments/homes in close proximity to other dwellings. That's more for German cockroaches, though.

Really, michgc? Go out sometime in the night. I see the big Palmetto bugs skittering around all the time on sidewalks, etc. in the summer.

Do roaches in NC fly like the ones in FL?

Nope. NC roaches use Expedia.

Do you spray for pests?

We don't use a pest service and only spray inside for occasional ants. We do spread insect granules outside a few times a year. Maybe we're just lucky?

You just might be a bit lucky.

The connotation among some that only dirty people have roaches is too common. I think it has as much to do with poorly built dwellings with tons of entrance points.

And, maybe, just maybe, we should reconsider our view of the little buggers. They may be heroes!

Back to the OP's questions.

Nothing related to real estate around here is all that expensive. Property tax rates are likely much lower than what you have in MN, so that reduces rental rates too. That said this is a farily major metro area with a functional economy so you can't expect ridiculous bargains.

There are quite a lot of activities for children, and we never run out of things to do with our kids, but probably not as much as you might find in the Twin Cities which is a larger metro area.

Winters do get cold, but the daily highs almost never drop out of the 30s. Typical days in the middle of the winter have highs somewhere between 40-60 degrees and lows in the 20-40 range. It is possible to go and do things outside almost any day of the year if appropriately dressed. We do have glorious days with highs in the mid 60s even in the middle of January. We get very little, and infrequent, snow. We had about an inch of snow fall twice this past winter (Jan 16th and Feb 17th) which was a pretty typical winter for this area. The snow we do get is seldom enough to cause a lasting nuisance and it always melts quickly, but it was enough to get out and build snowmen and do a little bit of sledding with my 2 year old for the first time. Last significant snow we had was Dec. 25-26 2010 where we got about 4-8 inches across the region. You have to go back to 2001 and 2000 to find anything bigger than that.

Here is a neat page summarizing weather events that have happened here in recent history.

The triangle seems pretty diverse to me. Certain areas of Cary and Morrisville seem to have a pretty high percentage of asian people and there are several asian stores around.
