I have been offered to relocate to Raleigh for my job and was trying to get some thoughts from people who have been to or lived in both Raleigh and Cincinnati. From what i have gathered in my research, Raleigh area has been a very up and coming city with great growth in the last 30 years whereas Cincinnati has a lot of old historic housing while losing almost half of its population to the suburbs within the last 50 years. Cincinnati has 2 professional sports teams which offer your usual entertainment around the ballparks; is there anything similar in Raleigh? Overall it looks like the cost of living is similar. Was wondering if this would be a similar mid size city feel seeing as the metro areas are very similar in population.

Although I have not lived in Ohio for many years, the Middletown area is my hometown and most of my family still lives in the Tri-State area. A lot of areas around Raleigh remind me of Ohio with country back roads and many older homes with front porches and a mix of older and newer more modern homes within the city. I would not place Raleigh in the same class as Cincinnati, but the area does have a lot to offer.
Although they are not a major league team, we do have the Durham Bulls baseball team nearby to attend games in addition to the Carolina Hurricanes hockey team and several college basketball teams, so it is a popular area for sports fans. We also have the NC Zoo and a water park not too far away, but nothing on the same level with Kings Island.
The other benefits of Raleigh are you can go to the mountains one weekend and the beach the next. Winters are very mild here compared to Ohio with occasional snow and ice storms. Overall I think you could find something very comparable here to what you have in Ohio.
Thank you for the information. I am currently living in the suburb of Villa Hills about 7 miles southwest of Cincinnati in the heart of suburbia. Currently the 8 mile commute takes anywhere from 25-40 minutes. Is this something that would be similar in Raleigh? Most the people i have talked to have said the triangle area has a more of small town feel than Cincinnati with much more southern hospitality and a slower pace. If so, it would be great to get away from those Ohio drivers haha Have you found this to be true?
Raleigh is definitely not as busy as Cincinnati and runs at a much slower pace but there is heavy traffic during certain peak travel times of the day as many people commute to work in RTP from outlying areas. Much of your commute time depends on where you choose to live and distance from work. Trust me, we have our share of crazy drivers here too, so not much getting away from that unfortunately.
Bring some Barq's Red Creme soda and a case of White Castles down with you would ya? Used to get those all the time visiting my grandparents in Sharonville. My grandfather used to mill turbine blades at the GE plant.
Raleigh is much smaller than Cincinnati but still a great place to live. It takes me 30 minutes to get to work from North Raleigh to RTP, which is a 20 mile trip. The rush hour traffic in Cincinnati is much worse than here.
I live in Durham, also came from Cincinnati for work. It is a very different feel, at least for me. I like it here, and don't regret moving, but I also miss Cincinnati a lot. It is hard for me to really pin down specific differences. I think when you live in the 'Nati there is an almost shared tribal experience (We know who will answer if we call 347-1111. We have "3 ways" every week. We look forward to the WEBN fireworks) that doesn't exist here. No, there isn't the old German architecture here, but this city didn't have that huge immigrant explosion like Cincinnati did. It has a different, equally fascinating history. I do a lot of genealogy, and there are small family cemeteries everywhere. You can still see the scars of the Civil war here - it is not at all uncommon to see headstones with "CSA" on them. Confederate States of America. That's really cool to me. Instead of East side v. West side we have Raleigh v. Durham. (Durham is where the cool kids live).

And don't forget the Mike Sell's potato chips too!
Oh....that reminds me. There are no Skyline Chili restaurants here just in case that's a deal breaker for you.

Raleigh will have better weather and probably more attractive suburbs across the board. Also much closer to the beach and probably about the same or closer to the Appachian mountains.
Cincy is a cool looking city down in a river valley, and it will have more entertainment options than Raleigh in downtown. I think they got a big zoo there in addition to ballparks and I think they got a casino there now if you like that. Cincy would be much better for hiking as well due to the hills around town. It would probably be too cold for me and I think it looks pretty gritty in downtown area. I think the traffic is proably worse in Cincy too.
Raleigh has a NHL hockey team, that is it as far as I know.
Raleigh's greatest advantage over Cincinnati is that Raleigh doesn't have a unified sewer system!
