I just read about this on the Northern Virginia board! I really like Harris Teeter. They are often overpriced, but they have great sales. I would totally miss them if they closed. I hope not.
The service at Harris Tester ALMOST makes it the place to shop but their everyday prices are ridiculous -I routinely see prices that are .50 to $1 or more than the same item at Target. They do have some good sales but hey a 'buy 2 get 3 free' sale on soda isn't such a great deal when the price per 12 pack is $6.29.

Where else do you buy 5 cases of Coke for $12.58? Or for $2.52 each? Or less?
I think HT buyers do a good job of procuring specials from vendors.
OTOH, we are just two adults. We can afford to buy something in bulk that will sit on the shelf until we use it up.
We aren't shopping for three kids, and are blessed not to be on a shoestring, so we have the luxury of buying something we don't need immediately because it is a good bargain at the time of purchase, or adjusting our menu to the good deal in the whatever department.
Throw in a few kids with pressing mandatory daily/weekly needs, or a tighter cash budget, and that changes the equation and we would probably have to shop a bit differently.
Harris-Tetter is the only 'large' grocery store that I actually enjoy going into. The ones I shop are bright/clean and have friendly staffs. If you shop coupons and sales they are also as good or better than most in prices. Personally I would hate to see them bought out by a Kroger or such.

I totally agree. That soda special makes me laugh. It's OK to jack up the price of the 12 pack so you can sell it on sale? Yes ultimately the 5 for the price of 2 is a good deal but I don't need 5 12 packs of soda unless I'm having a party. My kids can sniff out soda like pigs sniffing out truffles.
Their regular prices are so mindbogglingly above other places that's it's almost comical. $.50 is being nice - it's usually $1 or more.
When they have stuff on special, the prices are usually good. I almost never buy anything there unless it's on special.
I've never found their prices that much higher but I also tend to just buy produce, dairy, and meat there. I rarely buy things like chips and soda. Sure their broccoli might be a bit more expensive than Food Lion's, but it's also fresher.
